Chiel was the third daughter and sixth child of a merchant from Norey and his wife. Chiel's mother died in childbirth having her, a fact which the girl was never allowed to forget. Throughout the years she grew accustomed to having her siblings call her "murderer" and she learned to fling insults back at them with just as much loathing. Her father, who never was very successful in his work, found himself often away from his children, allowing them to do what they liked and so the endless taunting, fighting, and general abuse soon had free reign over the household.
As her father never made very much money, Chiel was forced to come up with other ways of getting any coin. However she soon discovered she had quite a talent for stealing and was able to get quite a bit of money for herself.
Eventually she reached her monetary goal and was able to runaway from the home she hated, swearing never to return. She also began keeping track of how many days she had been gone, a mark of her success, though eventually she grew distracted by other things and forgot what day she had been on.
Chiel wandered around Kanemoria for sometime, eventually ending up in Colndor, where she met a fellow thief, Jace. It was at this time that she also became part of a magical network of journals. Both events ended up bringing Chiel into contact with the supposed Franel lords of Dentoria and she became part of their group. For well over a year now she has followed them to Dentoria, Megam, back to Kanemoria and now they are headed to Atsiria. Her official reason for following them is to see the lords eventually crack. Whether this is her actual reason is something that only Chiel herself knows.

Chiel appears to most to be completely emotionless. She doesn't feel, she certainly doesn't care, all she does is stir people up for her own amusement. This view is one that Chiel is not only aware of but has worked hard to establish and promote.
For Chiel, everything goes back to her family: she hates and loathes every last one of them and wants to show the world that she is better than any of them could ever hope to be. She blames everything that has gone wrong with her life especially on her mother, whom she is glad to have "killed."
In the end, however, underneath Chiel's hard exteriour is a girl who is very messed up and hardly knows herself. And most of the time, she doesn't want to, refusing to admit that she might have any feelings or any other such weaknesses.

[edit] Appearance
Chiel takes after her mother in appearance, though of course she does not know it. She has a slim build and is average height. She has purple hair, which she usually wears tied back in a manner which makes it appear that her hair is actually cut short. Her eyes are coal black and always appear hard and unreadable. Underneath her cloak (which conceals her weapons quite nicely) she wears dark coloured clothing.
