[edit] History
The customs of Western Dentoria dictate that only a male can rule, whether by blood or by marriage. It is generally believed to be a good law: women are gentle, soft, emotional. They could never handle the strain of ruling a province, which is why it should be left to those more suitable; a husband, perhaps, or a brother, a son.
Mariana was taught this since before she could remember. Her mother, a pale, sickly woman who kept to her bed after countless miscarriages and stillbirths, was the heir to Tersel. When she married Mariana's father, the rule transferred from her younger brother to her new husband. However, the household-- indeed, all the countryside knew that the tall, congenial gentleman wasn't the true power in Tersel.
When Mariana was 16, she married Gareth, a cousin to House Conare. It was a favorable match for both parties, and the two got along well enough. In the days to come, however, a problem developed. A year went by, and then two, three. There was no signs of pregnancy. She was a fertile woman; her monthly bleeding had started at twelve, and she had never missed a month. She had wide hips for birth and large breasts for milk. Despite all their attempts, Tersel remained heirless.
Gareth, as Assistant Treasurer, was often away from the castle. Mariana, lonely at 19, soon grew closer to the head groom of Tersel's stables, whom she had known and secretly loved since she was young. Their friendship soon walked the rocky line between platonic love and romantic lust, and one night, the line simply disappeared.
Her husband arrived home the day after next, and no mention was made of her infidelity to anyone. However, she soon found herself to be finally pregnant. Her husband was overjoyed, convinced the child was his. A healthy baby girl was born nine months later, blonde like her mother and with no trace of her true father. She finally realized the truth: it was her husband, dear Gareth, who treated her so well, who was infertile.
She faced a choice: stay true to her husband, or produce a male heir by any means possible. Mariana, who had been raised to marry, birth, and die, knew what she must do.
In the next seven years, she gave birth to three more girls before finally delivering a boy. Her plan to leave the groom when a son was born, however, seemed impossible to fulfill; he was too dear to her now, more beloved than Gareth.
To add to this, a new surprise unfolded: she soon found herself pregnant again. However, the only possible date of conception was when the groom was away; Gareth must have been the father, therefore proving her excuses useless, her conscience tainted. Mariana was guilty of adultery, and nothing can convince her otherwise.
[edit] Personality
Mariana seems the perfect lady; kind and gentle, sweet and caring. Beautiful, but neither arrogant nor boastful. Intelligent, yes, but not enough to be a danger. She makes the perfect wife to one with dreams of rising farther such as Gareth. Underneath her flawless exterior, though, Mariana fights a neverending battle against crippling shame. She's fond of her husband, just almost loves him, but can't let go of her past love.
Despite any crime Mariana has commited, none could say she is a bad mother. She loves her children fiercely, they who seemed unable to exist, and would die to see them happy.
Mariana takes after her late mother in that she catches ill easily, and has spent quite a lot of time in bed as of late. She wastes away minutes, hours, days reading, writing, and embroidering.
