[edit] Summary

The lead character of Himitsu no Sensou, Lawrence is the young lord who had his life perfectly set out before him, left with nothing when he all but ceased to exist. Caught up in complications, expectations, and his own inner struggles, Lawrence is forced to lead the his siblings, retainers, and devoted followers to discovering the reason behind his life's crash into nonexistance.

[edit] History

Lawrence is the eldest child of Roivas and Eria, Lord and Lady of House Franel, and brother of Kail and Celeste. The three children grew up under a prophecy that they would be brought to the light, but Lawrence never thought that it was something he should be concerned with. Instead, he focused on his studies, knowing that one day he will rule Franel. His choice to learn archery, rather than the rapier traditionally studied by the eldest son, puzzled many, but now no one questions his skill with a bow. Lately, the Lord of Franel has seen to it that Lawrence receives experience in the management and politics of ruling a House of Dentoria.

One day, he found himself somewhere in the middle of the Atsirian desert, alone and far from home, without any idea on how he got there, but with supplies to suggest that he had been travelling for awhile. Among his supplies was a journal, blank when he had started writing in it, but soon became filled with the handwriting of complete strangers and, as it turned out, his siblings and three of his house's retainers. He also recieved an offer of help from Prince Reeve of Atsiria, and his sister Edalene, the Princess-Heir, and so, after finding Faith in a nearby oasis town, they made their way to Razen.

It seemed that the moment they set foot on Razen that fate was conspiring against them coming home. Firstly, Lawrence suffered from heatstroke and fainted during a ball thrown by the princess. A week later, he regained consciousness, much to his hosts', his siblings' and Faith's relief. The severity of the illness he was recovering from meant that he could not leave the palace until the healers decided he was well. When the princess fell ill, he stayed out of courtesy and personal concern. A few days after the princess recovered, the King died under mysterious circumstances just as Lawrence was attempting to ask for leave. He and Faith finally left Razen three days after the King's funeral, on a ship kindly provided for them by the royal family.

They were reunited with the remainder of his family and their comapany at the city of Emeron, and departed for Franel soon afterwards. It was in Franel that Lawrence discovered a few things: that all life and activity in Franel Manor ceased the day he found himself in the Atsirian desert, that there was no enemy of Franel he could discern that would have the ability to cast such powerful magic, and that the only lead he had was a decade old prophecy with a teneous connection to his family's current situation. It was there when he and his siblings decided to travel to the site where the prophecy was made. Lucre, the City of Light.

In Lucre, things only became more bizarre. Dreams came to him in the form of fragmented memories and fears, leaving him with the feeling that they should seek an audience with the guardians of the Altar. A medium reacted violently to their presence, calling them ghosts as she scratched herself til she bled. On the day they found the whereabouts of the medium who made the prophecy, a dying man came to his room, only to disappear once he called for help.

Lawrence and his company were told that the medium, Ruth, now resided on Papan, one of many islands between the Megam mainland and Lucre. Upon their arrival on Papan, Lawrence was taken to see the sister immediately, and this, along with subsequent visits, revealed many things. That Sister Ruth remembered his and his family's existance, that his parents were possibly dead, and that he and his siblings were destined for some greater fate ...

Lawrence was also told to return to where he and his siblings had found themselves the night their home disappeared. So upon leaving Megam, they boarded a ship bound for Kanemoria, where his brother Kail had woken in a village to the north.

[edit] Personality

Lawrence is someone who would say exactly what was on his mind, tactfully or not. This was a habit that had been much worse in his youth and had led him in some difficult situations, so with his present situation, he has had to quickly learn to guard his tongue. He much prefers people speaking plainly and honestly to him, but puts up with the formalities that come with being a noble of a minor House, since he sees no point in making a fuss over something so small. He comes across as laid-back and easy going, which he is, compared to his siblings. But he is determined, which may stem from his hate of being proved wrong, but can be so driven to the point where it wouldn’t be wrong to call him stubborn or bossy either.

Responsibility has always been Lawrence’s main concern and he has grown up to be quite protective of his siblings, something he has eased back in the past few years as he realised their need to become more independent. He tries to be a good role model for them but is nevertheless a bit embarrassed at how much Kail looks up to him. Practicality and reason has been drilled into him since birth, and it is rare to see him lose his temper, since his mindset is that losing one’s temper has never solved anything, it only clouds common sense and he likes having his common sense, thanks.

He's studious, but far from stuffy in his books. Unlike his siblings, he knows how to, and frequently makes a point of, being able to unwind and have fun. He’s interested in history and this, combined with a curiosity for other cultures, leads to a small part of him to wish that he could be free to travel, but with his responibilities, he knows that this is will never happen. When he finds time to relax, he daydreams about these places he has only read about on paper. Though he hasn't found much time to relax lately.

Ever since he and his siblings found themselves in places far from home, he has forced hinself to look at the situation and work out a plan, knowing that his siblings and retainers were relying on him. This knowledge can, at times, spur him on or weigh him down. He has had to keep a cheerful, confident face in front of his siblings, his retainers, the people who have chosen to follow him, the people who have chosen to believe him. To everyone, he remains the assured, strong, charismatic leader, a man grown, Lord of Franel in all but name. And men, leaders, lords do not show themselves cracking under the strain and suffocating at the pressure.

[edit] Relationships

Roivas, father, a figure he idolised.
Eria, mother, who he held dear.
Kail, brother, who he often teases but secretly holds much confidence in.
Celeste, cherished sister and confidant, whose flaws have started to frustrate him.
Faith, a retainer he strongly disapproves of, yet relies on.
Keagan, a retainer whose knowledge he respects, and whose more ... unusual habits he turns a blind eye to.
Sawyer, a retainer he considers his most reliable.
Felicia, nearly a sister to him prior to Franel's disappearance from history, and now a confusing aquaintance.
Hasten, his closest friend before Franel's disappearance, now engaged in an uneasy relationship.
Amaeyra, who he courted and was close to proposing marriage to beore Franel's disappearance, now engaged in a semi-courtship.
Tarmon, his future sovereign lord who he holds in well disguised disdain.
Princess Edalene, the Jewel of the Desert, whose personality amuses and bemuses him at once.
Prince Reeve, whose motives he doubts.

[edit] Appearance

Lawrence is quite tall for a man his age, with blond hair and blue eyes. During his youth, he was a bit of a gangly kid with long arms and legs, but now his arms and shoulders are quite toned from archery training. When he first woke up in Atsiria, he was dressed in his pyjamas and had some old clothes with him in his supplies. During his stay in the palace, he wore Atsirian clothing made to fit his ususually tall stature (for an Atsirian, that is). Some of these clothes he took with him on board the ship, as well as more appropriate clothing for travelling and the Dentorian climate, having given his pyjamas to the princess as a farewell/birthday gift.

[edit] Quotes

"Strange, how one doesn't quite realise how much they've taken for granted until their life's been taken from them."

"Is it the Moon Festival tomorrow? I never would've known it, Celeste hasn't been reminding me every second hour at all!"

"Admired, feared, respected she says. Hah. A man grown and I can't even say that ... can't even write that I think ... It's as if I say that they're dead, it might come true. ... Not how a grown man should think at all. More like a fool than a man."

"I am not some novice footsoldier waiting orders and shaking like a leaf before your glorious presence, we are not some unit of knights made to obey your every command."

"The world isn't always fair. Neither is it always right. We could sit here for days asking: why is all of this happening, why us, were we ever real, why does no one remember. We could make up in our minds hundreds of different answers, and then cling to the ones that give us hope. But we'll never find the true answer unless we look for it, and we're looking for it now. And when we do find it, we may not like what we've found. ... But at least we'll be certain that it's the truth. ... Be brave."
