[edit] History

Kessla grew up on the Kanemorian streets, the product of a street whore and a traveling merchant that her mother couldn’t remember the name of. Her mother’s only excuse for getting pregnant and remaining that was because she had ran out of herbs, and thought that maybe she should at least give being pregnant a try once before swearing off of it yet again.

But Kessla never knew her mother, or her mother’s name. Instead she was shuffled from house to house after the woman’s death in childbirth, until eventually she ended up at the orphanage. Naturally, that place was a nightmare, and she ran away when she was ten, taking to thieving and becoming quite good at it, of course, which was standard fare.

The guild, naturally, was always on the lookout for those who had talent. When she was fourteen, she had decided to take a stand against one of the grocers who was usually the best at catching thieves; many had lost a hand to him, and it was for their sake that she had begun her little plan of stealing from the nearby jewlers and setting him up for a fall. The Jewler called upon the guild, who discovered the truth, though instead of telling this to their retainer, instead chose to recruit her (so as long as she stopped what she was doing so that they could sweep this under the rug)

Being trained to be an assassin was different from being a mere streetrat. She does have to admit that at first it was actually quite shocking, though she grew used to it, as it wasn't as if she wasn't acquainted with death, before. She learned quickly that you could not make any mistakes in this field; as it usally was your life or the other person's, if you were caught.

Tethin was a few years older than her, and yet was quite experienced in the field. While he began as her "tutor", the two became partners, in more ways than one. Though they knew when to check their relationship at the door depending on the situation. When she accidently became pregnant with her first daughter, (herbs are not infallable, after all) they were at a bit of a crossroads what to do. They had become rather infamous within the guild, though they had debated running off and starting a new life together. Which could be easy or difficult, depending on where they went. It was ... somewhat less problematic just remaining in the guild and continuing with the work that they had come to enjoy; and they could give it a try, seeing if they could turn their children to the same path. It was a bit of an idealistic plan, but Tethin truly did not want to leave the city, and she very well couldn't leave on her own. Though the key was to make sure that their family wasn't used against them. Assassins were supposed to be detatched, after all.

Though regardless of the odd... decision, Kessla was a fairly good mother to her numerous children, from her oldest daughter Karia to her youngest son Tyrane. In this field she knew that the deaths of her family could come at any time, and yet... it would have been easier to accept their deaths knowing that they had died at work rather than watching them grow sicker and sicker, unable to recover, unable to do anything other than watch them waste away. Which she was forced to do, time and again, during the plague in Norey.

And now her husband is also ill, and there is nothing she can do but watch him suffer.

[edit] Personality

If someone were to ask Kessla which she preferred best, being a mother or being an assassin, she wouldn't be able to tell the answer. It's hard to say which she is first; it can be argued that a true mother wouldn't have made the decision to raise her children in such a manner. Still, this is Kanemoria, and it is here that anything goes, and the craziest of ambitions can be realized.

(Killing is something that you don't think about. It is something that is simply done. No questions asked. If you start to talk to your target and get to know them, you run the risk of developing feelings for them.) Kessla learned young that it is best not to rely upon /feelings/. At least in this line of work.

At home it is something completely different.

For years, working, she needed to lock down her feelings, her thoughts, her questions about her assigned tasks, simply allowing herself to be efficent and getting the job done. Whether it was setting up poisons or simply slitting a person's neck in the dark, it needed to be clean, efficent, emotionless. But the task of raising five children was somewhat of the opposite; when she was at home, every emotion that she suppressed would come to the surface, everything that she could not be while at work, whether it's random bouts of cheerfulness to motes of downright despair. She doesn't seem to be in control of it, either.

Until it's time for work. Emotions go off. It's been so practiced that her family is used to it, and she doesn't really realize the change either.
