[edit] History
Kallen's greatgrandfather was a Dentorian priest who, roughly one hundred years ago, chose to venture into Atsiria, as so many do, in an attempt to bring spiritial revival to its people. Unsurprisingly, he failed, but did meet a lovely young Atsirian woman who he wed and had children with. His bride was quiet and meek, and as such, he never quite settled into the gender roles of Atsiria. He passed this onto his only child, a son, who passed it onto his only child, also a son, who, in turn, passed it on to Kallen. While many were repelled by their "improper", "unseemly", and "disrespectful" behaviour, there were always the few women who found it interesting and exotic, if nothing else.
Kallen's father was a guard for a nearby wealthy merchant family, accompanying them on the dangerous treks when their shipments moved into more dangerous countries, protecting their goods from highwaymen. He taught his son his skills with the sword, growing up, attempting to secure him a position for the same family. However, Kallen was twelve years old when his father died on one of his journeys, leaving him alone with his sword and his mother, a quiet little thing who just so happened to be blind. The neighbouring women all offered to take Kallen and his mother on as dependants, but Kallen was determined to support his mother himself, as his father had always done. He found himself work, even at his young age, counting coins and keeping books on the lower levels of power for a different family from that which his father had worked for, scraping every penny he could find to buy clothing, food, comforts, and constant care for his mother. He had a solid head for figures, so he slowly began the rise in the ranks, still only making enough to support his family, but high enough that he had direct contact with the actual members of the family themselves ...
... and that was where he met Rhaieen.
The heir of the family for which he worked, she was incredibly beautiful, kind, collected, mature, and he fell for her almost instantly. Despite his low station and small income, despite her many suitors and untouchable perfection, despite everything that stood between them, Kallen was determined to win her heart.
He poured everything into her. He spent as much time by his side as he could, pulled the money he'd been working so hard to earn for his mother to buy her as much as possible, spent every moment he had working to win her in some way. And against all odds, she began to respond, and hope grew within him that he could stand a chance after all.
The rest of his life was falling to shreds. He was barely managing to keep his performance at work floating, his mother, angry at his neglect, moved out from their home to live with the women who had previously offered their services, he had no money, no time, barely slept, everything was for her. And it didn't matter to him, not at all, because Rhaieen was falling for him, Rhaieen loved him ... him, and another. A wealthy, handsome, sophisticated, mature, wealthy young man named Varnes.
He knew Rhaieen was torn, and he knew Rhaieen had loved him, and he knew Varnes was better looking, more well bred, and so dragonsdamned much richer, but that did not soften the blow when she chose to wed him instead of Kallen. There was nothing else for him. He couldn't work for her, not any more. His mother wanted nothing to do with him. Everything in Cleraine reminded him of her. And so he took the one thing that remained in his life, the sword his father had worked so diligently to make sure he was skilled with, and he left. Cleraine, the desert, and Rhaieen.
Since then, he's spent his time in Kanemoria, Dentoria, and Korin, selling the sword as his father had taught. Rhaieen is never a moment from his thoughts, and he hates himself for it. He drives himself down a dangerous line, doing everything in his power to distance himself from her, drinking constantly, throwing himself into every battle, careening for a self-destructive end.
Not a day passes when he doesn't decide to go home, but he never does.
When his journal became enchanted, he found that Rhaieen and Varnes were also there. Unable to bear being rejected again, Kallen took his father's name for his own, and has been semi-stalking Rhaieen ever since, partially with the hope of making her fall in love with him again, partially to make her pay for rjecting him in the first place, and partially just to not forget her.
[edit] Personality
Kallen was always an easy-going, smiling, joking, emotional man. He wore his heart and his mind on his sleeve. Practically nothing saddened him, he lived his life under a cloak of misery and failure, but his reactions were always bitterness, frustration, and rage. A lot of rage. His temper is explosive, dangerous, and terrifying to behold. He lashes out as hard as he can, ripping into whatever is upsetting him, and oftimes, even things that aren't.
As a result of his upbringing, Kallen never understand the class difference between women and men in Atsiria, and, likewise, doesn't understand that class difference betweem men and women in most other countries. While never known to defer to a woman, neither does he attempt to dominate them.
He also has a extremely obsessive tendancies. When something in the main focus of his life, he seems to forget everything else in his focus on it, even things that are incredibly important to him, and barely notices when they slip away.
He dwells on his past a great deal, but never sees himself as responsable for the bad things that happen in his life. His mother's estrangment was her own fault, losing Rhaieen was Varnes', right down to small things like waking up an hour later than intended. He rages out at these things at random.
While once very optimistic, his view of the world is mostly dark and unpleasant in the last six years.
[edit] Relationships
- Arken, father, who Kallen respected deeply and has taken the name of.
- Shalene, mother, abandoned and forgotten in Kallen's single-minded pursuit of Rhaieen's hand.
- Rhaieen, the only woman Kallen ever loved, who shattered his heart and his life, and who he hates nearly as much as he loves.
- Varnes, the rich suitor Rhaieen chose over Kallen, who he holds in contempt.
- Eban, Rhaieen's twin brother.
- Reiz, an Atsirian nobleman Kallen finds he actually quite enjoys talking to.
[edit] Appearance
Kallen is a good-looking man with unevenly cut maroon hair that falls to his shoulders and crimson eyes. He's well toned from his practice with the sword. Due to his Dentorian heritage, he's a notable amount taller than most Atsirian men, though only average height in most other countries.
