House Vernhail

Vernhail, a lesser house of eastern Dentoria, occupies both banks of the Middle Fallah, the eastern and western sides joined by a drawbridge.
Most of the land surrounding Vernhail is flat and low-lying, and is protected from flooding by a system of dykes and dunes, although sinking due to the conversion of peat to farmland remains a problem. As farming the land is difficult, Vernhail’s income mainly comes from fishing, and a significant number of Vernhail’s inhabitants are employed to work on the aquaduct system that supplies water from the Fallah catchment to the lands north of Eblar.
House Vernhail is known for its researchers and engineers – the drawbridge and the aquaduct system in particular are considered their crowning achievements to date. The house is also expert in the natural magics, due to a few immigrant Kilians. They are considered by their more proper Eastern peers, as well as most of the nobility, as almost frighteningly progressive in their thinking, but, like their Eastern peers, value education more highly than anything else. The ruling lord of House Vernhail traditionally heads the Research Council, which manages and supervises development of ventures that are deemed beneficial to society, such as farming tools and irrigation systems. Lord Niall, a genius engineer himself, currently rules Vernhail. Their crest is brown diving falcon on a pale yellow background and their words are Yield to None.
