[edit] History

Emmeline is the third of five children of the Lord and Lady of Nallen. Ever since birth, Emmeline has been fairly sickly: her body can’t handle very much physical activity and bright lights often hurt her eyes, which have led her to spend most of her time within her bedroom, where the conditions can be careful controlled and where she doesn’t have to move around too much. Very few people outside the family have ever met Emmeline, because not only is she reclusive due to her health, but she is not very socially-inclined anyway.

The House of Nallen has long been feuding with the House of Rowan, whose lands neighbour theirs. Emmeline has been uninvolved personally in this feud, but has seen its effect on her family and thus does hold a deep resentment for their rival, especially as she prefers to have things ordered and routine, which is sometimes impossible with the feuding. Emmeline loathes disruption in her life, and upholds the family motto of “The Just Flourish” in believing that her house is always right.

Emmeline’s life has been fairly secluded and uneventful otherwise, though she has recently begun to study dark magic. Because of her physical condition, she has somewhat of an obsession with death and darkness, and enjoys writing her poetry about these subjects.

The addition of her writing book to the network of journals at first did very little to alter Emmeline's life, though she was interested in the helpful critique she received for her poetry. Gradually however her interest in the journals increased beyond her writing, especially as she began to develop some relationships with others on the journal. She was most effected by talking to Brendan of Keirnan, another Dentorian noble who had lived a life of poor health. Brendan's death deeply upset Emmeline far more than would have been expected, for while she had spent a lifetime being acquainted with the process of dying, her actual encounters with death were very limited.

Eventually however, life went on. Emmeline continued to write poetry and to deal with the limitations of her health. She began to use the journals as more than a writing book as well, enjoying the contact with others, though not all of them. It was a great surprise to her when her sister, Caroline, first appeared on the journals and not an altogether pleasant one, though she has long-grown used to dealing with Caroline's ways. As winter came, Emmeline began to feel tired, however she also was inspired and began to write a long poem which she views as her "great work."

Winter passed, and so did summer. Emmeline continued to poem but found it slow-going. Then one autumn day, Caroline, back from her humiliation in Bresa, decided to bring Emmeline out into the city. This decision would eventually cost Emmeline her life. While at first she seemed fine and even happy to have seen the city, a few days later Emmeline fell ill with pneumonia. Though she received excellent care, her immune system simply was not strong enough to fight the disease.

Emmeline died on October 12.

[edit] Personality

Emmeline, like any good Eastern Dentorian noble, is rather prim and proper, except when it comes to discussing House Rowan. She is very particular about how her life is structured, preferring a very set routine. She also enjoys repetitive actions, such as brushing her rather long hair, which she takes the better part of an hour to do every morning and night. Most of her average day is spent working on her poetry, reading, academic studies, or learning magic.

When dealing with others, Emmeline often does seem detached and dazed…unless her poetry is involved, in which case her concentration is completely focused. She can often be quite morbid too, as she has lived with the spectre of death her entire life, since it is not expected that she will live to be very old.

[edit] Relationships

Horace - her father, whom she doesn't see much of.
Jelena - her mother, who runs the Nallen household and is the instigator of the "Routine"
Thomas - her brother, age 25, who helped her learn magic and visits infrequently.
Caroline - her sister, age 23, who pushes Emmeline towards a different life.
Patrick - her brother, age 11.
Laurel - her sister, age 9.
Brendan - a friend, whose death upset Emmeline very much.
Erin - an acquaintence, whom Emmeline discusses poetry and life with.
Quinn - an acquaintence, whom Emmeline discusses art with.

[edit] Appearance

Emmeline is a rather small and thin. Her skin is very pale, which is off-set by her extremely long, dark hair. Her most striking feature is her large green eyes, which are her only natural colour, though she usually does put colour on her lips.
