[edit] History
Eliza was the first child born to the previous Lord and Lady of Temair. The Lord of Temair, while delighted at the birth of a healthy child, could not hide his disappointment that Eliza was not the son he had been hoping for. Two sisters and miscarriages followed until her mother grew too old for childbearing, and so her father, resigned to the fact that his eldest daughter was going to inherit the seat of the great house Temair and all the powers that came with it, made sure that Eliza would be prepared for her future duties. She was taught governance, politics, the history of Dentoria and the events that led to its unification. She memorised its laws and was taught the rhetoric to discuss those laws, persuade others to follow them and when they did not, apply those laws to punish them. She studied Council statutes and rulings since Dentoria's establishment. She was told of the new ideas and sciences that would help Dentoria progress. She was expected to master words and languages so that she could engage in converation with the immigrants amongst her subjects and foreign lawmakers.
Then, when all the tutors had taught her all they knew, her father taught her the skills she would need to manage Temair's other duty, the duty that fell on Temair at unification, the duty that most of the country left unsaid. She was taught how to manage the network of spies who served to help her deal justice, the King's justice. These were not spies who watched the common people. They spied on nobility, because no noble should be above the law. She was taught how to filter the useful information from the meaningless, who was serving her faithfully and who had been bought by another. She was taught who to trust, and whose words to doubt.
In the end, her father taught her not to trust at all.
Her father died as she turned twenty-four and so she took her place as the ruling Lady of Temair. Though eastern Dentorian law has assured her right to rule without the interference of a husband, she had married on her father's advice to a distant relative of the King twice her age to secure her position and there are still those among her peers who grumble that a woman has no place ruling the east, keeping the laws of the country, and enforcing the King's justice. In four years, she has built a formidable reputation that she quite happily allows to spread.
But often, the image of the Lady of Temair differs to the nature of Eliza herself.
[edit] Personality
The Lady of Temair is fair and just and beautiful. She sees all, hears all, knows all. Her reach is far and little escapes her notice. She is at ease in the company of men, and admired by women. She is a model of courtesy and grace. She is the perfect wife, a loving mother, an attentive daughter and an affectionate sister. No one surpasses her in the knowledge of the country's laws and no one is as fierce a defender of them. To those who break the laws she keeps in the name of the King, her justice is swift and terrible.
This is the face Eliza shows.
Eliza is a woman who has undergone a dramatic transformation upon her acension as ruler of Temair. Her responsibilities as chief lawkeeper and head of spies has left her with a sense of near constant paranoia and an inability to trust, something her father, who was possibly just as paranoid as she is, only encouraged in the young Eliza. Though constant suspicion was useful in her duties, the mindset she had adopted while working had long ago seeped into her everyday life. Eliza is vain, possessive and easily jealous. Though she despises her husband, she can't stand the thought of him looking at another woman. She fears losing her mind as her mother has. She fears her sisters supplanting her in her people's affection. She fears her husband planning to overthrow her. She fears her son being used as a pawn for the plots of those of her advisers who do not wish to be subordinate to a woman. There are days where she is completely in the grip of a fantasy world where she is under constant seige.
This is the face Eliza keeps to herself.
