Conare, the Great House of the West, is the fifth largest city in Dentoria and the largest city in the west. It lies two and a half days ride to the northwestern shore and five days ride to the Pilgrim’s Pass. It neighbours Tersel, Rowan and Milesia.
Conare’s wealth is clearly evident in the city’s architecture and aesthetics. Government buildings are painted a creamy white, with mahogany brown roof tiles. Due to its proximity to Megam, its architecture has a heavy Megam influence and is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Dentoria. Most roads in Conare are paved with sandstone, and fountains and sculptures form the centrepiece of the market squares. It houses libraries with one of the largest collections of religious texts outside of Megam and a very large temple of some fame. The most important building is, of course, the Treasury, which lies adjacent to Conare Manor. The Treasury holds vaults that contain collected taxes and stores of Conare’s own gold. This building is under constant guard.
Even before unification, where House Conare almost immediately allied itself with the cause of Frederik I, it has enjoyed a strong alliance with the royal house – so much that Milesia appointed the Lord of Conare as High Lord of the West in its place. It is a friendship that continues to the present day. Lord Nicolas has ruled Conare ever since he came of age, his father dying when he was a child. The Lord of Conare holds a place in the King's Council as the master of the Treasury and is responsible for determining and managing the tax system and the country’s budget, and formulating and implementing financial and economic policies. It is because of his control over the country’s finances that he is thought as the second most powerful man in Dentoria after the King. This, in addition to its wealth, means Conare plays an integral part in Dentorian politics. House Conare’s banner is a gold unicorn running on a green field. Their words are Strength in Adversity.
