The eldest daughter of House Nallen, Caroline finds the constraints of her mother's "Routine" ridiculous and unbearable at times. While she never crosses the line of outright rebellion, she does what she can to upset things and have control over her life.

Caroline is the second child and first daughter of Lord Horace and Lady Jelena of Nallen. She had a fairly typical upbringing for a proper East Dentorian lady: a solid education; lessons in proper etiquette; never wanting anything, while at the same time never being extravagant. It came as a bit of a surprise when Caroline chose to take up the path of archery, as it is not a typical calling for a lady, but after some convincing she was given permission to try it out, and proved to show some talent in the area.
All and all, she led a fairly happy and stable life, a functional part of the “Routine:” the great schedule, set by Lady Jelena, under which the entire household worked. The Routine consists of strict guidelines about when things can happen and when they cannot, and unless there is a damn good reason, going against these rules is seen as a very bad thing to do, even if you are the eldest daughter of the House. Caroline does follow the Routine for the most part, but every now and then she does go against it, though only in the most mild of manners.
One of the parts of her family life which Caroline struggles against the most is the acceptance of the fact that her younger sister Emmeline is going to die young and there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Caroline has always been strongly affected by Emmeline and has always pushed for Emmeline to be allowed to see more of the world, to have her live. She has never accepted that it was better for her sister to be sheltered away in her room, living what Caroline always saw as a half life. In her numerous and usually unscheduled visits to Emmeline, Caroline has tried to convince her sister to try more, her pleas almost always falling on unhearing ears. This has led to resentment rising, mostly against the rest of the family for making Emmeline believe that this was all life could ever be for her, though she also is angry at her sister for refusing to try.
As Caroline was of age, it was soon decided that it was time for her to start courting. Lord Quinn of Bresa was chosen to be her future husband, to strengthen the ties between these Eastern Dentorian Houses. Caroline was not overly excited about this prospect, but as it would keep her near Nallen and near her family, especially Emmeline, she accepted that it was the best match she could hope for. However, she soon found an obstacle to this in Lady Philippa of Temair, who also had her sights set on Quinn. Suddenly Caroline found herself having to go all out in order to obtain Quinn's favour and work towards an eventual marriage, in fear that she would be sent far away if she was not. Her own personal dislike, bordering on hatred, of Philippa served to heighten her determination not to lose this competition.

On the outwards, Caroline does try to present an image of the proper young Dentorian lady she has been raised to be, cool and calm, yet she often has trouble keeping her emotions from showing, especially in her eyes. She wears her emotions on her sleeve, an open book visible to the world. While this is usually not too much of a problem, when Caroline is frustrated by something she can have quite the temper, though she is more likely to choose the flight response when such situations emerge, rather than fighting things out.
Caroline is very stubborn. Once she has set her mind to do or think something, it is close to impossible to stop her. One of the ideas she is most set on is that Emmeline could actually be healthy and experience life, if she only tried. Caroline will never just accept that her sister will die and there’s nothing she can do about it. She also cannot believe that Emmeline can possibly be happy with the life she has lived so far, even though her sister has never once complained and does seem quite content.
Caroline also hates the Routine. She dislikes having every moment of her life so structured and does what she can to disrupt it, without going beyond the bounds of proper parent/child relations. She has always believed that she would be happier living in a world with less constraints and more freedom, though she is not unhappy under the current situation, just frustrated.
Caroline is often quite slow to make judgements on anything, but once she has developed an opinion on something it is next to impossible to make her change her mind. Even if proven wrong, she has a tendency to cling to her own beliefs, not liking to admit when she has made a mistake.

Caroline has medium-length, wavy, red hair and large, expressive amber eyes. She has a slim build and is slightly below average height. She usually wears fairly conservative, elegant clothing, as is fitting her station, except when she is practicing her archery. She is the very picture of health, especially in comparison to Emmeline.
