[edit] Summary

The middle child of a traveling merchant, Calaith's always been looking for a chance to be his own person and do what he wants with his life. The opportunity came to him in the form of a controversial play in Norey called Rent, that lead to his meeting a motley group of travelers looking for answers to the strange mysteries revolving around Franel and the magic journals. Between gaining some unexpected friendships and beginning training to better his skills in magic with Keagan, he's finally found somewhere he feels at home.

[edit] History

Calaith was born into a trade family, who spent most of their time traveling from corner to corner of Kanemoria making sales. His parents raised him to take up the family business when they finally decided to settle down. Unfortunately Calaith has no interest in his family's trade business. Instead his abilities in magic and music have become his main focus and he'd do just about anything to put either, or both, to work.

He learned to control his abilities as a mage from various stops along his parents' trade routes, but was never apprenticed to one particular teacher as his parents didn't approve of his chosen professions. Calaith also spent much time playing his guitar and singing at trade stops while his parents did business, often joining in with other local or traveling musicians. While unable to convince his parents to allow him further study in music, they did not have a problem with him playing at their stops as if often brought more patrons to browse their goods.

On their most recent stop in Norey, Calaith learned of a new controversial show and decided he would try for a part to start a career away from the drudgery of the trade routes. After returning to his home with his family he packed up the last of his belongings, including the journal his mom gave him when he was a small child, but never actually used. That night while everyone was asleep he snuck out of the house and began the journey back to Norey.

[edit] Personality

Generally quiet, introverted, and shy, Calaith mostly keeps to himself and isn't quick to meet new people or try new things. Among those he knows well, and often behind the semi-anonymity of the journals, he opens up as a sarcastic, fun-loving, and laid back kind of guy. Very little can get a real negative reaction out of him as he takes nothing seriously. If something does happen to get under Calaith's skin he may explode for a short amount of time, but all is usually forgotten within a day and things quickly return to normal. While not exactly lazy, he is unlikely to take extra initiative to accomplish tasks unless there is good reason to do so or the task at hand is something in which he's extremely interested, in which case he often obsesses over it.

Calaith's two main interests in life are Magic and Music, often allowing himself to be dragged into conversations for hours at a time on either subject and one of the few things to bring him out of his usual introverted state. While he's exceptionally talented at both, when it comes to magic, Calaith is always trying new things and loves every opportunity he can to use his abilities. He's not as quick to pick up his guitar or perform in public unless as an excuse to get away from the trade wagon, but he often dreams of the chance to do so as a profession. When it comes to settling down, Calaith would rather be adventuring and exploring, traveling around Kanemoria with his guitar and spell books.

[edit] Relationships

  • Elden is an actor whom Calaith met briefly during his first audition for the play Rent and also spent a good amount of time practicing with once rehersals started. Calaith sees him as a bit on the strange side, but admires his talent and respect for the theater.
  • Matthias introduced himself to Calaith as Mysterio but failed to convince him that it is his name. Calaith's constant prodding to learn the name of "Mysterio's pet tiger" over the first few days he was on the journals led him to being ignored.
  • Fayre is another actor in the play Rent whom helps encourage Calaith when he's being pessimistic. She also happened to take away his virginity.
  • Rolen is a priest whom got off on the wrong foot with Calaith when he first joined the channels. Since then they have been pissing each other off on a regular basis. Rolen was the inspiration for Calaith's favorite catchphrase, "Well the scriptures do teach forgiveness," and the use of "goddesses" instead of "dragons" as a curse word.
  • Karyl is a creepy sociopath that has taken a "liking" of sorts to Calaith. Calaith's inability to keep his foot out of his mouth put him on Karyl's bad side. Karyl originally was using Calaith as a way to get to Marias.
  • Marias is a creepy schizophrenic who attempted to warn Calaith about Karyl but was too late. He was also in the play Rent where Calaith first met him.
  • Jace, a thief who travels with Franel Crew, is the last type of person Calaith ever expected to be associating himself with. Their adventures during the Tornado in Norey after Jace's escape from the palace led to him becoming a somewhat close friend.
  • Isobel, was one of the musicians in the play Rent, and quickly became one of the few people Calaith is completely honest and opened with. She also does a lot to encourage his song writing.
  • Finlay, the Crown Prince of Hanalan, dyed Calaith's hair green after Calaith unwittingly convinced him to do so.
  • Inara, Calaith's sister, constantly gives him grief in a way only a spoiled younger sister could.
  • Keagan, a tired, old knight, has taken Calaith under his wing with some grueling soldiering. Though he'd never admit it, Calaith very much looks up to Keagan and takes most of what he says to heart.
  • Elyiethe, a beautiful actress from Norey who Calaith is crazy about.
  • Pearl, a young woman in Franelcrew whom is helping Calaith learn to dance. Calaith has a secret minor crush on her.

[edit] Appearance

Calaith isn't often considered to be very good looking but probably could be if he cleaned himself up. He stands approximately 6 feet tall and is of an average build. His natural hair color is a silver shade that makes his dark red eyes stand out giving him a somewhat unnerving look. However his once silver locks have been dyed a heavy green, due to Calaith's accidentally convincing Finlay to use the last of his hair dye, making his eyes not quite as noticable. Calaith's unkempt look is thanks more to laziness rather than a conscious decision, besides if someone doesn't take him for what he is than they're probably not someone he'll be interested in hanging around.

Calaith's attire is mostly made up of baggier clothes. As with his hair, his clothing is usually unkempt, wrinkled, and often somewhat old and tattered looking. While always clean and in good condition, he just doesn't take good care of the things he wears and often just crams them into his backpack as he travels rather than keeping things neat and tidy.

[edit] Quotes

  • "I LOOK LIKE A DRAGONSDAMMED TREE"
  • "It was hard to tell I was joking about an evil demon horse from the fiery depths? What do you take me for, some kinda heretic like that crazy lady in Atsiria? And now you're correcting my grammar? Such a great way to say thanks for the ride... don't the scriptures teach giving thanks? Surely they must teach more than just forgiveness..."
  • "My ass hurts. I blame Terrance"
  • "Dammit Jace... you had to go and piss off a nice girl and wake us all up. Can't you wait to have a fight til like... afternoon or something?"
