[edit] Summary

Amaeyra is the eldest daughter of House Lireth, and reprsentative of all that is ideal in a high-born lady. Her world went by unquestioned until her sister Elthea sparked events that shattered everything he had convinced herself to believe. Now, it is a trial to maintain her perfect image and she has taken to occupying her mind with anything, in an effort to distract herself from her own personal anguish and grief.

[edit] History

Amaeyra is the first-born daughter of the Dentorian House Lireth. As she was born second eldest, before 3 other siblings, she remembers a time when she didn't have to compete so much for her parents' attention -- or more specifically, her father's. The competitive atmosphere not only remained but intensified with the addition of more siblings over the years. She never had to put in much effort to gain recognition and praise, though rare it was, for she seemed to have a natural talent for the abilities deemed significant to a noble lady.

Things that she remembers from her childhood are pretty things, beautiful things, fields of flowers and bubbling brooks and the scent of pine, smiles and laughter. Now the demands placed on her leave her no time to revisit these places, and laughter a thing rarely heard in the halls of Lireth. What she remembers most clearly, though, was Hasten laughing and smiling with her, before their father took him and crafted him into a man of cold stone. She resists lingering in the memory of it, for those of the line of Lireth are independent and self-reliant, and those who are independent and self-reliant do not cling to a memory. Even so, she wishes that she were more close to her siblings, and attempts to establish some kind of relationship with them, every now and then. However, their studies always seemed to take precedence and her half-hearted efforts fell by the wayside.

Amaeyra had no idea of the extent to which Elthea resented her, not even after Elthea's disappearance. When she found her sister in Mansoure, Elthea broke down, revealing her hurts and envy in a way that even Amaeyra could not deny. Scared and confused, she had planned to bring Elthea to Lireth for treatment, until Elliot convinced her that the last thing Elthea wanted was to come back home and to stay in Mansoure instead, arranging accommodation for them at Mansoure Hall.

Even when recovered, Elthea refused to return home, and her problems were compounded when Lila, a knight of Lireth, confessed that Lord Elmudd had ordered her to find and return Elthea. Torn between her duty as a daughter and as a sister, Amaeyra decided to leave Mansoure for Emeron, reasoning that her father's fury at her disobedience may be tempered somewhat by a possible match between one of his daughters and Tarmon, heir to Emeron. However, when Hasten had access to the journals, Elthea's spirit broke again at the reminder of home, altough despite it, he was successful where Amaeyra was not: Amaeyra and Elthea returned to Lireth, and life as Amaeyra had known it returned to normal. Almost.

Amaeyra was of marrigable age, undeniably beautiful and extraordinarily accomplished. The perfect wife for a powerful lord. And so, her father decreed, despite Hasten's opposition, that she do what she had tried to use as cover beforehand: make a match with Tarmon of Emeron, future sovereign of the North and an arrogant, conceited man incapable of loving anyone but himself and his delusions. As she arrived in Emeron, Hasten promised her that he will find her another suitor, and that she will never become Tarmon's bride. A few days later, he told Amaeyra that he believed the story of Lawrence, the supposed heir of House Franel, and that he wished for her to speak to him when he had previously forbidden it. Her stay in Emeron ended up being brief, but nevertheless brought her great pain. In a private moment, Tarmon assulted her and she returned home when Elthea, who had returned to an unstable state after disgraceful conduct during a ball at Lireth, died, throwing herself from her bedroom window.

As the time for her return to Emeron grew closer, Amaeyra grew increasingly desparate to find a way to prevent marrige to Tarmon and agreed to Hasten's plan to offer her hand to the Prince instead. However, their father discovered their plans. On summoning them to his rooms, he ordered Hasten to escort Amaeyra to Emeron, while taunting him about his preferences, which Amaeyra had never known of.

Hasten killed Elmudd in response, and proceeded to blame her for his actions. Out of guilt, fear and love, she helped hide the body.

[edit] Personality

Amaeyra presents herself as someone completely assured and confident of herself and everything she does. Her tutors praise the speed which she learns staves and spells, her deportment and etiquette is excellent, she dances with elegance and grace. In short, she seems to be perfection personified. Despite this, she is not at all arrogant and every action is sincere. She has a persistently cheerful outlook on life, and is hopelessly optimistic, even in the face of a grim reality. The rare rebuke she takes on board and accepts, changing herself accordingly for the better.

She has been raised to expect nothing but the highest of standards from herself, and is bitterly disappointed and distressed when she does not achieve them, though she never shows it. The pressure of maintaining her standards is possibly the only thing that could depress her. She represses emotions such as rage, annoyance, resentment, jealousy, anything that would be seen as "bad" to feel, preferring the facade of easy geniality. The rare rebuke she scrutinises and obsesses over, and changes herself accordingly to avoid rebuke again.

The perfect woman loves her family, and Amaeyra is no different. No one sees how she resents her mother's lack of warmth and interest, how she is threatened by her youngest sister's wit and beauty almost comparable to her own, how much her other sister's near truths pain her, how she dislikes her younger brother becoming nearly as absent as their mother, how much she dreads being in her father's presence, how much she fears the brother she still loves best. Hasten had been her childhood playmate and best friend before he was taken from her and a man of stone took his place, and there is a part of her that longs for the boy she knew to return.

Amaeyra is essentially a sweet and kind young woman who was once oblivious to, or lacking understanding in, the hurts of people who should matter the most to her. Now that the veil has been lifted and her eyes forced open, she is horrified at what she sees, but does nothing to change it. Her own hurts she keeps secret and close to her heart, for it is not the way of women of Lireth to be so open. Besides, it's easier to keep believing that everything will turn out for the best.

[edit] Relationships

Elmudd, father, who crafted her into the perfect woman.

Hasten, eldest brother, who she loves despite his flaws, and fears because of them.
Fartgus, younger brother, whose flaws she purposely stays blind to.
Elthea, younger sister, who she tried her best to make happy.
Isanae, youngest sister, whose barbs she tries to ignore.
Felicia, sister-in-law, whom she pities.
Allison, her guard and student.
Lila, whose independence she envies.
Tarmon, future sovereign lord and near betrothed.
Lawrence, the man who would have been her husband in the reality where Franel existed, now a strange sort of friend in the reality where it does not.

[edit] Appearance

Amaeyra has long blonde hair, blue eyes and a slender, willowy frame. She is tall for a woman, but not enough to dwarf an average man and is remarkably beautiful. She carries herself with perfect poise. It is almost as if all others are rendered hopelessly ordinary in her presence. Her clothes are well-made, and more often than not, wears gowns with soft, muted colours. She travels with her horse, Lyta, a sleek brown mare.

[edit] Quotes

"Do you remember what you said to me after you took Hasten away from me, Father? Do you remember? You told me that it was time I was taught how to be a lady. Be fair and lovely and beautiful, you said, so that people will love you, and Lireth. And I did it, to make you happy, because it would please you. I'm a lady now, Father, accomplished and beautiful, beyond compare, just as you wished, just as you wanted. Loved, envied, admired. Fit to be the daughter, sister, wife and mother of lords and princes and kings. So beloved am I that men will draw swords and kill in my name. Are you not happy, Father? Does that not please you?"

"Please please, almighty Dragons light and dark, he is a good man, please, do not judge him so harshly, he is a good man, he means well, all he does, he does for ... he does all this for ...."

"The living suffer more than the dead."
